Rashid, Moeen get Test recalls

Adil Rashid was recalled to the England Test squad for the first time in more than 19 months after being named in a 13-man squad for the first Test against India starting at Edgbaston in Birmingham on August 1.Moein Ali Adil Rashid

The selectors on Thursday (July 26) also brought back Moeen Ali, rewarding the spin twins for their excellent displays against the Indians in the One-Day International series earlier this month, in what will be England’s 1000th Test match.

Rashid, the legspinner, has 38 wickets from 10 Tests with a best of 5 for 64 on debut against Pakistan in October 2015, but went out after an underwhelming tour of India in 2016. While he did pick up 23 wickets in the five-Test series, they came at a high cost as England went on to lose the series 0-4.

Should he be picked to play in Birmingham, it will be 30-year-old’s first home Test.

Moeen, the offspinner who took 19 wickets during England’s 3-1 conquest of India at home four years back, last played a Test in March against New Zealand and was left out for the two-match home series against Pakistan last month. Moeen has 133 wickets from 50 Tests, and returns after troubling India’s best in the last two ODIs in particular.

Jamie Porter, the Essex paceman, is the lone new face in the squad. Porter, 26, was the County Championship Player of the Year in 2017 and helped Essex seal their first title since 1992.

Chris Woakes, the fast bowling-allrounder, was left out after the selectors felt he required time to regain his form after recovering from thigh and knee injuries, according to a release from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The squad: Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Sam Curran, Keaton Jennings, Dawid Malan, Jamie Porter, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes.

Ed Smith, the national selector, said, “The selection panel felt that Chris Woakes needed a little more time to regain full form. We are keen to avoid rushing him back from injury too soon. Chris will combine playing for Warwickshire in T20s alongside building up red ball fitness and workload with the England coaches.

“Moeen Ali has taken his strong bowling form from England’s ODI team into the county championship, where he picked up eight wickets in a fine display against Somerset this week. Moeen is recalled to the XI having missed out on selection against Pakistan.

“Adil Rashid also returns to the England Test squad. Before the selection meeting, Adil had confirmed his availability to play Test cricket for England for whole of this summer and the upcoming winter tours to Sri Lanka and West Indies. Following his earlier decision in February 2018, Adil has a white-ball only contract to play for Yorkshire this summer. That arrangement is unchanged by his selection for England. However, Adil fully understands that if he wishes to be eligible for Test cricket in the 2019 season, he must have a county contract to play four-day cricket. Moving forward, England Test players must be committed to the County Championship.

“Clearly, the one-off circumstances around Adil’s return to the Test squad are unusual. However, the selection panel was unanimous in believing that Adil should be selected in England’s squad.

“Jamie Porter has been the outstanding seam bowler in the County Championship over the past three seasons. He also impressed for the Lions v India A last week. With his resilience and appetite for wicket-taking, Jamie fully deserves his elevation to the England Test squad. Sam Curran, also full of form and confidence in Lions and county cricket, retains his place in the squad after his promising debut at Headingley.”

In the said Lions match, Porter picked up three wickets, dismissing M Vijay in the first innings and picking up the scalps of Vijay again and Mayank Agarwal in the second.
