Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the new head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the IPL 2027 season, bringing extensive playing and mentoring experience to the franchise.
Chennai: Chennai Super Kings have named former India pace bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
Zaheer takes over from Stephen Fleming, who brought an 18-year association with CSK to an end before moving into a coaching role with England cricket. Fleming was appointed England men’s Test head coach in July.
The appointment marks another major coaching role for Zaheer, who has remained involved in professional cricket since retiring as an IPL player in 2017.
During his IPL career, Zaheer represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, making 100 appearances and taking 102 wickets at an average of 27.27.
Following his playing career, Zaheer moved into cricket administration and player development. He joined Mumbai Indians as their Director of Cricket Operations ahead of the 2019 season and later took up the role of head of global development.
He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor for IPL 2025, although he left the franchise before the following season.
Zaheer also enjoyed an outstanding international career with India, claiming 610 wickets across formats and establishing himself as one of the country’s leading fast bowlers of his generation.
Speaking after his appointment, Zaheer said he was delighted to join a franchise with CSK’s history and passionate fan base.
“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.”
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed Zaheer to the franchise, highlighting his playing credentials and experience in developing young cricketers.
“We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise,” she said.
CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan also backed the appointment, pointing to Zaheer’s experience and understanding of fast bowling.
“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family,” Viswanathan said.
Zaheer’s arrival represents a significant change in CSK’s coaching structure after the departure of Fleming, who had been one of the central figures behind the franchise’s long-term success.
The former India pacer will now take charge as CSK prepare for the IPL 2027 season, with his experience in player development and coaching expected to be central to the team’s plans.
