BARCELONA: Lamine Yamal created another milestone in his remarkable career as Barcelona produced an impressive 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League, bringing the English side’s unbeaten start in the competition to an end.
Yamal opened the scoring early before Brazilian forward Raphinha took centre stage with a second-half brace to secure a convincing victory for Hansi Flick’s men at Camp Nou on Tuesday.
The result ended Aston Villa’s perfect run in this season’s Champions League, having won their opening three matches. Both teams now have nine points in the standings following the encounter.
For Yamal, the opening goal was particularly special. The teenage Barcelona sensation reached 14 Champions League goals, surpassing Kylian Mbappé’s record to become the highest-scoring teenager in the competition’s history.
Yamal Makes History with Early Barcelona Goal
Barcelona wasted little time making their presence felt, taking the lead in the seventh minute through Yamal.
The home side’s aggressive pressing forced an error from João Gomes, allowing the ball to fall kindly for the young Spanish international. Yamal took full advantage, cutting inside onto his favoured left foot before producing a trademark finish beyond goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
The goal underlined his growing influence on Europe’s biggest club stage and added another landmark to his rapidly developing career.
Aston Villa responded positively despite falling behind. Matty Cash and Gomes had opportunities to restore parity, while Johan Manzambi also threatened the Barcelona defence.
However, the hosts remained dangerous going forward and gradually established greater control of the contest.
Raphinha Scores Twice to Seal Barcelona Victory
After a competitive opening half, Barcelona increased their advantage seven minutes after the restart.
Raphinha’s effort in the 52nd minute took a deflection on its way towards goal, leaving Suzuki with little chance of preventing the ball from crossing the line.
The Brazilian was not finished, however.
His second goal showcased his instincts as a centre-forward. Following excellent work from João Cancelo, Raphinha timed his movement perfectly to get ahead of his marker and convert the delivery with a clinical finish.
The brace took his tally to 19 goals in just 13 appearances this season, further highlighting his outstanding form under Flick.
He also moved to 23 Champions League goals for Barcelona, drawing level with Robert Lewandowski. Only Lionel Messi, with 120 goals, and Luis Suárez, with 25, have scored more in the competition for the Catalan club.
Barcelona’s Attacking Partnership Continues to Shine
Yamal and Raphinha once again demonstrated why they have become central figures in Barcelona’s attacking setup.
The pair have been responsible for 32 of Barcelona’s 60 goals this season across 15 matches, underlining their importance to the team’s attacking success.
Raphinha has particularly flourished since being deployed in a more central attacking role, while Yamal continues to combine creativity, confidence and remarkable finishing ability despite his young age.
Barcelona had opportunities to extend their advantage further. Fermín López was denied by Suzuki, while Yamal narrowly missed the target on a couple of occasions.
Nevertheless, the three-goal margin was enough to underline Barcelona’s superiority in the second half.
Barcelona Regain Momentum Ahead of Atletico Madrid Clash
The victory was another important step in Barcelona’s attempt to regain consistency following consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid last month.
Their emphatic 6-1 victory over Alaves had already provided a confidence boost, and the performance against Aston Villa offered further encouragement.
Flick’s side will now turn their attention towards Sunday’s important LaLiga encounter against Atletico Madrid, with the Barcelona players looking to carry their European momentum into the domestic title race.
For Aston Villa, the defeat represents their first setback in this season’s Champions League campaign. Despite a promising start and some encouraging attacking moments, they were ultimately unable to contain Barcelona’s formidable attacking combination.
