Mumbai: Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings are reportedly close to finalising a major player exchange ahead of IPL 2027, with Hardik Pandya likely to join Punjab while India pacer Arshdeep Singh heads to Mumbai.
A major transfer deal could reshape the squads of Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with reports suggesting that Hardik Pandya is close to moving to the Punjab-based franchise.
According to a report by Sportstar, the two franchises have reached an advanced stage of negotiations over a proposed player exchange involving India’s premier all-rounder and left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh.
Under the reported arrangement, Pandya would leave Mumbai Indians and join Punjab Kings, while Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod are expected to move in the opposite direction.
If completed, the deal would rank among the biggest player trades in IPL history. The senior management of both franchises is understood to have broadly agreed on the proposed arrangement, with the remaining formalities expected to be completed through the IPL authorities.
An official announcement could follow later this week, although neither franchise has publicly confirmed the deal.
Why Punjab Kings Want Hardik Pandya
Punjab Kings are reportedly keen to strengthen their squad with an experienced Indian all-rounder who can contribute significantly with both bat and ball.
Pandya’s ability to provide balance to the playing XI, along with his experience of leading an IPL franchise, makes him an attractive option for the Punjab outfit.
The all-rounder previously captained Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their debut season in 2022 and guided them to the final in 2023. He subsequently returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season and took over the captaincy.
However, his second stint with Mumbai has been challenging, with the franchise struggling for consistency under his leadership.
A move to Punjab Kings could offer Pandya a fresh opportunity and a different environment as he looks to revive his IPL fortunes.
Arshdeep Singh and Vishnu Vinod in Mumbai Indians’ Plans
Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are expected to receive two players as part of the proposed exchange.
Arshdeep Singh’s arrival would strengthen Mumbai’s fast-bowling department, particularly with his ability to bowl effectively with the new ball and deliver crucial overs at the death.
The left-arm pacer has established himself as one of India’s leading limited-overs bowlers and would add an important dimension to Mumbai’s bowling attack.
Wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod is also reportedly part of the deal. His inclusion could provide Mumbai with another wicketkeeping option and additional depth in their batting department.
The proposed exchange would therefore see Mumbai address multiple squad requirements while Punjab acquire an experienced all-rounder.
Kolkata Knight Riders Also Explored Hardik Pandya Trade
Punjab Kings were reportedly not the only franchise interested in securing Pandya’s services.
Kolkata Knight Riders had also held discussions with Mumbai Indians over a possible deal involving the all-rounder. However, negotiations with Punjab appear to have progressed further.
With the IPL 2027 mini-auction approaching, franchises are working on their squad combinations and player retention strategies.
The proposed Mumbai-Punjab exchange could become one of the biggest developments in the IPL transfer market if the remaining formalities are completed.
For now, the deal remains subject to official confirmation from the franchises and the IPL authorities.
