Mumbai: Hardik Pandya’s potential move from Mumbai Indians has reached a critical stage, with the franchise reportedly exploring trade possibilities ahead of the upcoming IPL season. However, MI have firmly ruled out any possibility of including star batter Suryakumar Yadav in a player-exchange deal.
Speculation surrounding Pandya’s future has intensified, with Punjab Kings emerging as a possible trading partner. India’s premier left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is understood to be among the players discussed in a potential swap involving the Mumbai Indians captain.
While both franchises have maintained a cautious approach, sources within Mumbai Indians have made it clear that Suryakumar is not available for trade.
“SKY is not up for trade, and there have been no discussions, nor will there be,” sources close to the franchise indicated.
Suryakumar endured a relatively modest IPL 2026 campaign, scoring 270 runs in 13 matches. However, his contribution to Mumbai Indians’ 2025 season was exceptional, when he accumulated 717 runs in 16 matches. His importance to the franchise remains unquestioned despite the dip in his recent numbers.
Arshdeep Singh Emerges as Key Name in Hardik Pandya Trade Talks
The possibility of an exchange involving Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh appears to have gained traction. Punjab Kings, however, have not publicly confirmed their willingness to release their leading fast bowler.
Arshdeep’s ability to deliver with the new ball and execute under pressure at the death makes him an attractive option for Mumbai Indians, who are believed to be prioritising a frontline fast bowler in the transfer market.
Pandya’s preference could nevertheless become an important factor. A move to Punjab Kings would not necessarily guarantee him the captaincy, as Shreyas Iyer currently leads the franchise. A potential switch to Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, could offer a different leadership opportunity.
Punjab Kings are reportedly taking time to evaluate the proposal before making a decision, with the next 48 hours potentially proving significant for the negotiations.
Rajasthan Royals Also Enter the Picture
Punjab Kings are not the only franchise reportedly linked with the Pandya trade discussions. Rajasthan Royals have also emerged as a possible destination, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi among the names understood to have featured in preliminary discussions.
Mumbai Indians, however, are believed to be more interested in acquiring a proven fast bowler rather than pursuing a deal centred around batting or spin options.
Jofra Archer could theoretically be an attractive proposition, although there is no indication that Mumbai Indians have formally approached Rajasthan Royals regarding the England pacer.
Mumbai Indians Looking for a Frontline Fast Bowler
The franchise’s reported interest in a high-quality pace option comes after disappointing returns from Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar during the previous campaign.
Boult managed just two wickets in five appearances, while Chahar claimed eight wickets in eight matches. Chahar had also taken only 11 wickets in 14 appearances during IPL 2025.
These performances could prompt Mumbai Indians to reconsider their bowling combination, with Boult potentially facing an uncertain future at the franchise.
MI still have time to assess their options before making a final call on player retention and release decisions.
Why Mumbai Indians May Not Need Another Batter
Unlike their bowling department, Mumbai Indians have considerable depth in their batting resources.
Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir and Will Jacks provide the franchise with several established batting options. New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner also adds depth with his ability to contribute with the bat.
With several of these players expected to feature regularly in the playing XI, MI may not be particularly keen on adding another batter who could struggle to secure a guaranteed place.
This could also explain the franchise’s reported lack of interest in Chennai Super Kings youngster Ayush Mhatre.
Harshit Rana Deal With KKR Did Not Materialise
Mumbai Indians had also reportedly held discussions with Kolkata Knight Riders regarding a possible deal involving Harshit Rana and a batter in exchange for Hardik Pandya.
However, KKR were apparently unwilling to release the Indian fast bowler, bringing those discussions to a standstill.
With Arshdeep Singh now emerging as a potentially suitable option, Mumbai Indians appear to be weighing their alternatives carefully.
The coming days could determine whether Pandya continues with Mumbai Indians or begins a new chapter with another IPL franchise. For now, Punjab Kings remain an important part of the discussions, although no final agreement has been announced.
