Wrestler’s detained as Police crack down on march to new Parliament

Srinagar: Star Wrestler’s were detained as Police cleared the protest site to stop protesters march towards new Parliament building on Sunday. 

The Khap panchayats of various states, farmers and supporting wrestlers had announced  ‘mahila samman mahapanchayat’ near the Parliament building.

However, the wrestlers, who were marching towards the new Parliament building, were detained at Jantar Mantar and barricades were also broken.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia was also detained by security personnel while marching towards Parliament building. 

Videos showed a scuffle breaking out between protesters and police personnel even as the former tried to resist. In one of the videos, a few female police officers can be seen forcefully dragging a woman away from the protest site. Star Wrestler’s Sakshi, Phogat sisters can also be seen in a scuffle and being detained by Police.

“These women had raised the tricolor on foreign soil, today these daughters are being dragged like this and the tricolor is being insulted on the road like this,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal while condemning the incident was quoted as saying. 

The women wrestlers’ protesting at Jantar Mantar who have been demanding action against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had called a mahapanchayat outside the new Parliament building on Sunday.

The protesters have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar — about 3 km from the Parliament complex — since April 23. Security.
