Riyadh: Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating return to action after missing a first-half penalty, but Al Nassr secured a narrow victory over Neom SC thanks to João Félix’s second-half winner.
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty on his return to club football following his suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation, but Al Nassr managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Neom SC in the Saudi Pro League.
The Portuguese superstar had an opportunity to put Al Nassr ahead just before half-time but sent his spot-kick wide in stoppage time. The penalty was awarded after Neom defender Mohammed Al Dossary brought down João Félix inside the box.
Despite Ronaldo’s costly miss, Al Nassr found the breakthrough shortly after the hour mark through Félix. The Portugal international collected his opportunity on the edge of the penalty area and fired home to give his side the decisive lead.
The victory marked Al Nassr’s seventh league win of the season and lifted them to third place in the Saudi Pro League standings, three points behind leaders Al Qadsiah, with a game in hand.
Ronaldo Returns After Portuguese FA Suspension
Ronaldo’s appearance came after the Portuguese Football Federation handed him a 30-day suspension and imposed a fine of €255 following his departure from the national team camp earlier this month.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward had initially been provisionally suspended after leaving the Portugal camp shortly before a Nations League fixture against Denmark.
His departure reportedly followed a disagreement over playing time with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo had been left on the bench against Norway and subsequently accused the coach of failing to honour promises regarding his role in the team.
The federation imposed the maximum fine permitted under its regulations, while acknowledging mitigating circumstances. Ronaldo’s admission and previously clean disciplinary record were among the factors considered in determining the punishment.
Denmark Return Could Be Next
Ronaldo could be available for Portugal’s next match against Denmark on November 14 if the suspension is backdated to the date of the provisional ruling.
While his missed penalty provided an unwanted talking point during Al Nassr’s latest outing, Félix’s decisive strike ensured the Saudi club collected all three points and maintained their pursuit of the league leaders.
