Jehangir Lone Incident: Why Is Red Premier League Management Silent?

Srinagar: The alleged assault involving local cricketer Jehangir Lone and a spectator during the Red Premier League (RPL) 2026 semifinal at Bakshi Stadium has triggered widespread discussion across Kashmir. However, while the two sides have presented their versions of the incident, the silence of the tournament organisers and the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has raised serious questions about accountability and event management.

The incident took place after the semifinal between Athwas India XI and Royal Goodwill CC, which Athwas India XI won by three wickets. Amid celebrations following the match, chaos erupted on the playing field, with videos and accounts circulating showing Lone allegedly assaulting a spectator.

The incident occurred in the middle of the field at Bakshi Stadium, a major sporting venue in Srinagar, during a tournament organised by Red FM and supported by the J&K Sports Council under its My Youth My Pride programme.

What has made the episode more concerning is not only the incident itself but also the apparent lack of an official response from the bodies responsible for organising and supporting the event.

Two Contradictory Versions Emerge

Lone, in his statements following the incident, has maintained that the spectator abused him and his family, provoking his reaction.

However, the spectator, reportedly from Nasrullah Pora in Budgam district, has disputed that account. In his version, he said he did not abuse Lone and claimed he did not even know the cricketer personally.

The spectator reportedly said that he and others had entered the field to celebrate Athwas India XI’s victory and were shouting in excitement when Lone allegedly approached him from behind and attacked him.

He has also reportedly claimed to have filed a formal complaint. The status and details of that complaint have not been independently verified.

With the two sides offering conflicting accounts, it is for the appropriate authorities to establish the facts through a fair and impartial inquiry. Neither version should be treated as conclusively established without verification.

Where Are the Organisers?

While the incident has become a major talking point, the question that demands an answer is straightforward: why has the RPL management not issued an official statement?

Red FM, as the tournament organiser, has a responsibility to address concerns arising from an incident that occurred during its event. At the very least, the organisers should acknowledge what happened, explain whether they are examining the matter and clarify what measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.

Silence does little to reassure players, spectators and the wider sporting community. Instead, it leaves room for speculation, competing narratives and further public anger.

A prompt, factual statement would not amount to prejudging either party. It would demonstrate that the organisers recognise the seriousness of the incident and are prepared to address legitimate questions about the conduct and management of their tournament.

In professional sport, event organisers are expected to communicate responsibly when incidents of public concern occur. That responsibility becomes even more important when an incident takes place on the playing field, in front of spectators, during a prominent competition.

What About the J&K Sports Council?

The J&K Sports Council, which supported the tournament under its My Youth My Pride programme, also needs to clarify its position.

The Council may not be directly responsible for every action of an individual at a tournament, but its association with a sporting event makes it reasonable to expect a response when a serious incident raises questions about spectator safety, field access and event management.

Bakshi Stadium is a prominent sporting facility in Srinagar. The circumstances under which spectators entered the playing area, the arrangements in place to control access and the response of event officials are all matters that deserve examination.

If spectators were able to enter the field after the match and an altercation subsequently occurred, questions naturally arise about the adequacy of security arrangements and the responsibilities of those managing the venue.

These questions should be answered on the basis of facts, not assumptions. The Council should clarify whether it is seeking a report from the organisers and whether any review of event-management arrangements is being considered.

A Sporting Event Cannot Be Managed by Silence

The Jehangir Lone episode should not become merely another controversy that dominates public discussion for a few days before fading away without accountability.

Sporting events require more than players, sponsors and an audience. They need clear rules, effective crowd management, responsible officials and a mechanism to deal with incidents when they occur.

A player who believes that he or his family has been verbally abused can report the matter to the appropriate authorities. Equally, a spectator who alleges that he has been assaulted is entitled to have his complaint examined fairly.

Provocation, if established, can be considered as part of the inquiry, but it does not remove the need to establish the facts and determine responsibility through the proper process.

The same principle applies to the organisers. Their role should not be reduced to promoting the tournament when everything goes well. Responsible management also means responding when something goes wrong.

Red FM and the J&K Sports Council should therefore clarify what they know about the incident, what steps they have taken and whether an internal review is underway.

The Questions That Need Answers

The controversy raises several questions that deserve clear answers:

Has the RPL management formally examined the incident?

What arrangements were in place to prevent unauthorised entry onto the playing field?

Were event officials and security personnel present when the altercation occurred, and how did they respond?

Has the J&K Sports Council sought an explanation from the organisers?

Will the competing accounts be examined impartially, and will any findings be made public where appropriate?

These are legitimate questions about accountability, spectator safety and the standards expected of a professionally organised sporting event.

The objective should not be to pronounce anyone guilty through public debate. It should be to establish what happened, protect the rights of those involved and ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future.

The central question remains: if an incident of this magnitude can occur during a major sporting event at Bakshi Stadium, why are the organisers and the supporting sports authorities yet to provide a clear public response?
