Babar Azam likely to step down as White-ball cricket captain: Report

Srinagar: Pakistan skipper and star batter Babar Azam is likely to step down as white-ball cricket captain after the World Cup 2023.

A report in Pakistan media said that Babar has been seeking guidance on his future, consulting with former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja and people close to him.

During the training at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Friday, Babar Azam sought advice from Ramiz Raja, report said.

“The decision on whether to continue as captain will be influenced by consultations upon his return to the country. In the current circumstances, Babar Azam values the advice he receives, particularly from his father,” report said.

Report quoting sources further added that the suggestion is based on the belief that prominent captains have faced challenges in Test series in Australia. Consequently, individuals in Babar Azam’s inner circle have recommended he step down from captaincy roles in both red and white-ball cricket.

The report said that Babar wanted to resign in India itself during ongoing World Cup but has now postponed it and will finalise his choice upon returning to the country.

Pakistan is on verge of not making it into the final four of World Cup 2023.

Pakistan still has an opportunity to conclude their campaign with 10 points, but their net run-rate is a cause for concern. To surpass the Kiwis, they require a substantial victory against England.

If Pakistan bat first against England, they would have to beat them by 287 runs.

If Pakistan bowl first, they need to dismiss England for 50 runs and chase the target in two overs or 100 runs in three overs.
