Srinagar: Ace Taekwondo player Afreen Hyder won the first-ever senior silver medal in Kyorugi, a full-contact sparring discipline, in the history of Taekwondo in Jammu and Kashmir at the 39th National Senior Taekwondo Championships, which was held in Guwahati, Assam, from September 9–11, 2023.

The event was organized by the All Assam Taekwondo Association, under the aegis of the Taekwondo Federation of India, and recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt of India, marking a momentous occasion that will go down in the annals of the region’s sporting history.

Afreen Hyder’s ascent to Taekwondo glory began with her participation in the Nationals, where she faced fierce competition from athletes across the country. Competing in Kyorugi, a discipline known for its intense full-contact sparring, Afreen showcased her resilience by taking on five consecutive fights.

After qualifying for the Senior National Taekwondo Championship, she trained hard in the camp, which was organized by the J&K Taekwondo Association and sponsored by the J&K Sports Council.
