Sydney: Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has showered praise on the group of Pakistani cricketers set to feature in the upcoming 15th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL), describing them as “global superstars” whose involvement is vital for the growth of Australian cricket.
Six Pakistan players—Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Rizwan, and Hasan Ali—have been contracted for the season. Their inclusion has generated excitement across BBL franchises, with some teams even introducing special fan zones dedicated to their star signings.
Finch: Pakistan Cricketers Bring World-Class Experience
Speaking on a podcast, Finch emphasised the immense value international players bring to local squads.
“They’re not just Pakistan players; they’re Pakistan superstars—global superstars,” Finch said. “That’s so important to our game because they’re such great players. Passing on that knowledge to young Australian players is absolutely crucial.”
Babar Azam’s Arrival Sparks Buzz in Australia
Four of the six Pakistani players will be making their BBL debuts, including Babar Azam, who was directly signed by the Sydney Sixers. The franchise gave him a hero’s welcome, launching a special dedicated fan zone called ‘Babaristan’ to celebrate his first-ever BBL appearance.
Finch reserved special praise for the former Pakistan captain, calling him one of the finest players he has ever faced.
“I played against Babar in Pakistan—it was almost impossible to get him out,” Finch recalled. “He may have been a little quieter recently, but at his best, he’s a world-beater.”
Rizwan Praised for Energy and Influence
Finch also highlighted Mohammad Rizwan’s lively presence behind the stumps.
“Mohammad Rizwan never shuts up behind the stumps—but he’s seriously talented,” Finch joked affectionately.
He revealed that young Australian star Jake Fraser-McGurk has already begun learning from Rizwan in just a few days around him.
“It’s incredible what it means—not only for the players involved, but for our young players who get to learn as much as they can from these internationals.”
A Boost for the BBL and Australian Cricket
Finch believes the participation of top-level Pakistani stars in the BBL elevates the league’s quality and offers invaluable learning opportunities for emerging cricketers.
“It’s so important that this knowledge is passed on. That’s why having internationals is crucial in our game,” he added.
