Rishabh Pant Reacts to India’s Growing All-rounder Strategy Under Gautam Gambhir Ahead of 2nd Test vs South Africa

New Delhi: With Shubman Gill sidelined due to injury, Rishabh Pant will lead India in the second Test against South Africa, marking his debut as Test captain. India trail 0-1 in the two-match series, and the Guwahati encounter becomes a must-win fixture for the hosts. On the eve of the match, Pant faced several tough questions from the media, particularly regarding India’s increasing reliance on all-rounders under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

India opted for three spin-bowling all-rounders in the opening Test, prompting debates about whether the team’s balance is leaning too far away from traditional specialists. When asked if Test cricket should still be considered a “specialists’ format,” Pant offered a measured response.

“Team balance is the key,” Pant said. “Sometimes a specialist helps more, sometimes an all-rounder gives you better stability. It’s all about deciding who fits the combination and how you want to approach the game.”

Pant also shared insights into his leadership philosophy, emphasising empowerment and freedom for players.

“I want to give players the freedom to express themselves,” he explained. “The goal is for everyone to learn, make the right decisions for the team, and grow together. Whatever knowledge I have, I’ll always use it to guide the team on the field.”

Pant Reflects on Guwahati Memories and the Pitch Conditions

The Guwahati venue holds a sentimental place for the wicketkeeper-batter.

“This ground is very special for me,” Pant said. “I made my ODI debut here, and now it’s the venue for my first Test as captain. That makes it memorable not just for me but for everyone here.”

Discussing the pitch, Pant indicated that the surface is expected to be more batting-friendly compared to the one in Kolkata, where the first Test ended inside three days.

“I feel this wicket will play better. It looks good for batting early on and may turn later in the match. It should be a competitive Test,” he added.

With high stakes and a fresh leadership role, Pant’s approach and India’s team strategy will be under close watch as they attempt to level the series.
