Srinagar: World Snow Day was celebrated in District Budgam with District Development Commissioner (DDC) Budgam Tariq Hussain Ganai flagging-off SnowShoe run.
Joining people from all over in celebrating January 19 as World Snow Day, DDC Budgam Tariq Hussain Ganai also celebrated the day alongwith athletes and SnowShoe racers of the district Budgam on Sunday.
It is first time that World Snow Day was celebrated in the District Budgam and by that Budgam joined rest of the people from over World to celebrate the day. This day is celebrate top highlight the importance of snow for the sustenance ecology and life. It was also first time that SnowShoe run was held in district Budgam.
Hailing athletes and sportspersons of Budgam for highlighting the day and highlighting the importance of Snow, DDC Budgam said, “It is important to celebrate this day alongwith rest of the World. By celebrating the day we can highlight the importance of snow for the survival of human race and this planet. Sportspersons should play an important t role in highlighting such issues I congratulate all of you for coming forward to celebrate this day”.
About the SnowShoe activity and race, DDC Budgam said, “I am told that this is first time that SnowShoe activity has been held in District Budgam. I am familiar with the fact that this activity is popular in Europe and US but has been introduced recently in Kashmir. It has got huge potential in Kashmir and not just as a sport but everyday activity during winter months”.
“As winter sports activity are not being held in District Budgam we can make this activity popular in our district as it doesn’t need infrastructure development. As a first step to make the activity popular among youth of Budgam we will be hosting number of SnowShoe races in coming months in various parts of Budgam,” he further said.
On the occasion Sheikh ul Aalam Sports Development Association Budgam gave away memento to the DDC Budgam and thanked him for coming forward to celebrate World Snow Day. It was also decided that that first ever Budgam open SnowShoe run would be held at Industrial Area SIDCO Ompora Budgam on January 23.
