SYDNEY: Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli reached yet another monumental milestone on Saturday, overtaking Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara to become the second-highest run-scorer in One-Day International (ODI) history.
The achievement came during the third ODI between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), where Kohli produced a composed and classy 74-run innings off 81 balls to lead India to a dominant win.
With his latest knock, Kohli’s career tally now stands at 14,255 runs in 305 ODIs, moving past Sangakkara’s 14,234 runs in 404 matches. Only Sachin Tendulkar — the all-time leader with 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs — is now ahead of the Indian maestro.
At 36, Kohli continues to redefine consistency and longevity in the game. His ODI record remains phenomenal, featuring a staggering average of 57.71, a strike rate of 93.26, along with 51 centuries and 75 half-centuries — numbers unmatched by any other batter in the modern era.
Notably, Kohli is the only player among the top 10 ODI run-getters to maintain an average above 50, a testament to his dominance and adaptability across conditions.
Adding to his legacy, Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s tally for most white-ball international runs (ODIs and T20Is combined), further solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest limited-overs batsmen in cricket history.
