Mumbai: India’s rising teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is on the verge of a historic milestone, with reports indicating that the 15-year-old has been shortlisted for a senior national team debut during the upcoming tour of Ireland.
According to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sooryavanshi is among several young prospects being considered by the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar. The Ireland tour is expected to feature a second-string squad, providing an opportunity to test bench strength ahead of a busy international calendar.
“He is in contention for the Ireland tour, and selectors have shortlisted his name along with several others,” a source told The Indian Express.
The report further suggests that Sooryavanshi is also likely to be part of India’s tour of Zimbabwe later this year.
Sooryavanshi has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in Indian cricket, thanks to a series of explosive performances in IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals.
His standout knocks include a breathtaking 26-ball 78 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a 17-ball 52 versus Chennai Super Kings, and a blistering 14-ball 39 against Mumbai Indians. These performances have not only captured attention but also sparked calls for his elevation to the national side.
If selected, Sooryavanshi could become India’s youngest-ever international cricketer, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16 years and 205 days.
The overall Indian record is currently held by Shafali Verma, who made her debut for the women’s team at just 15 years, seven months, and 27 days.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal also endorsed the youngster’s case, praising his exceptional talent and readiness for the international stage.
“This prodigy certainly deserves to debut for India as the youngest. It’s rare to see such talent at such a young age,” Dhumal wrote on social media.
Former India stars, including Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble, have echoed similar sentiments, stating that Sooryavanshi appears ready for the next step in his career.
Their backing adds further weight to the growing belief that the teenager could soon don the national colours.
Following the Ireland series, India are scheduled to tour England for a white-ball series featuring five T20Is and three ODIs starting July 1. Senior players are expected to return for that assignment, making the Ireland tour a crucial opportunity for emerging players like Sooryavanshi.
Still in his mid-teens, Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. If selected, he would not only achieve a personal milestone but also mark the beginning of what many believe could be a generational cricketing career.
