Srinagar: The UFC is heading back to the world’s most iconic combat arena — Madison Square Garden — for UFC 322 on November 15, featuring two championship superfights that have fans buzzing. In the main event, Islam Makhachev faces Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight title, while the co-main event sees Valentina Shevchenko defend her women’s flyweight crown against Zhang Weili.
Dubbed the “gold rush in New York City,” UFC 322 promises high-stakes drama and elite matchups. Both main event bouts carry special significance, as UFC CEO Dana White has changed the promotion’s approach to “champion vs. champion” fights — now requiring fighters to vacate titles before switching divisions.
That rule has set up two monumental clashes. Islam Makhachev (27-1), who set a new record for most lightweight title defenses — surpassing even his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov — has vacated his belt to move up and challenge Della Maddalena. The Australian champion, fresh off a dominant win over Belal Muhammad, is making his first defense of the 170-pound championship and vows to stop Makhachev’s climb to two-division glory.
In the co-main event, Zhang Weili — the dominant force at women’s strawweight — has moved up to challenge Shevchenko for the flyweight crown. Zhang, who reclaimed her strawweight title by defeating Mackenzie Dern at UFC 321, has since beaten top contenders Amanda Lemos, Yan Xiaonan, and Tatiana Suarez. But dethroning Shevchenko, who reignited her second title run after closing her trilogy with Alexa Grasso, won’t be easy.
The UFC 322 card is stacked beyond the top two fights. Fans can look forward to bouts featuring former champion Leon Edwards, rising star Bo Nickal, and fan favorite Benoit Saint Denis. With names like Sean Brady, Michael Morales, and Erin Blanchfield also on the lineup, the night promises fireworks from start to finish.
