Star bags Indian cricket media rights for Rs. 6,138.1 crore

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sold the rights to Indian cricket on television and digital platforms from 2018 to 2023 to Star India for a whopping Rs 6,138.1 crore. This means, there has been a 59 per cent increase from the previous cycle of rights, which were sold for Rs. 3,851 crore for the period of 2012 to 2018.India

While the Board still has not revealed which company has won the rights at the e-auction that went on for three days, BCCI’s acting treasurer, Anirudh Chaudhry took to Twitter to announce that Star India has grabbed the deal. “Congratulations @StarSportsIndia on bagging the BCCI Media Rights @6138.1 crores at an average of 60.1 per game,” Chaudhry tweeted.

Sony Pictures Network India, Star India and Reliance were the three companies in the fray. It is believed that the winning bid came in the global consolidated rights (GCR) category. This includes worldwide television and digital rights.
