Despite preparing a green track at SK Stadium in Srinagar to exploit home advantage, Jammu & Kashmir find themselves on the brink of defeat in their Ranji Trophy opener against Madhya Pradesh, whose batters have shown far greater composure and technique in challenging conditions.
Led by captain Shubham Sharma’s 79-run knock, Madhya Pradesh posted 196 in their first innings. J&K, in reply, were bowled out for just 120, conceding a crucial 76-run lead.
MP have strengthened their position further in the second innings, reaching 151/5 and extending their overall lead to 227 runs. With J&K struggling to contain the opposition and facing a substantial fourth-innings target, an outright defeat appears increasingly likely.
Despite the assistance on offer for the pacers, Madhya Pradesh’s batters showed resilience and discipline, allowing the ball to come to them rather than committing too early. J&K’s batters, by contrast, struggled to cope with the movement, with several failing to demonstrate the technique and patience required on a lively surface.
The difference between the two sides has also been evident in their partnerships. Madhya Pradesh have repeatedly stitched together useful stands, ensuring that the loss of a wicket does not trigger a collapse. J&K, meanwhile, struggled to build partnerships and never appeared settled at the crease.
The irony is hard to miss: a green pitch prepared to give J&K a home advantage has instead exposed their batting frailties. With bad light forcing an interruption, the weather may offer the hosts some respite. However, Madhya Pradesh have already secured the first-innings lead, which guarantees them three points, while J&K face the prospect of leaving the match with a defeat unless they can produce a remarkable turnaround.
