Prithvi Shaw scores big hundred, gets into verbal spat with former Mumbai teammates

Srinagar: Batter Prithvi Shaw playing for Maharashtra vs his old team Mumbai in a pre-Ranji trophy warm up match slammed a big hundred and was involved in heated verbal altercation with his old Mumbai teammates on Tuesday.

Shaw started his First-Class career with Mumbai in the 2016-17 season and made his Test debut the following year. He parted ways with his long-time domestic side earlier this year.

Shaw’s inconsistent form and fitness problems have drawn criticism in recent years. After switching team Shaw has got to decent start with new team and on Tuesday, batsman demonstrated his dominance over the Mumbai bowlers by smashing his century off 140 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 181(220) balls, a knock featuring 21 boundaries and three maximums.

However, soon after his dismissal, videos emerged of Shaw being surrounded by his former Mumbai teammates, which led to a heated moment on the field. In an attempt to diffuse the tension, one of the umpires even tried to guide Shaw out of the commotion but one of the fielder also followed. Later there was some discussion between Shaw and the fielder with the umpire in between as the other batter present in the middle joined in to sort out matters.

Meanwhile, Shaw’s opening partner, Arshin Kulkarni, also slammed 150.

Shaw has represented India in five Tests and six ODIs. He was dropped from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy side last season because of issues with his discipline and fitness.

Shaw was dropped from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad last year due to fitness and form issues. Although he was part of Mumbai’s victorious Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, he was later omitted from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad. In a bid for consistent game time, Shaw made the switch to Maharashtra.

Speaking after his hundred in the Buchi Babu tournament, Shaw had said he was willing to rebuild from the ground up if necessary.

“I don’t mind coming from scratch again because I’ve seen many ups and downs in my life. And I’ve been up there, I’ve been down there, I’ve come back up. So, everything is possible, I feel. I’m kind of a very confident guy, confident in myself, my work ethics. I feel, I hope that this season will go really well for me as well as for my team.”
