Brussels: Michael Olise produced a moment of individual brilliance late in the game as France defeated Belgium 1-0 to maintain their perfect start to the Nations League under Zinedine Zidane.
Zidane, managing France for only the second time, made nine changes to the side that defeated Turkey on Friday. Despite the reshuffle, Les Bleus controlled large periods of an entertaining contest but struggled to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Belgian defence.
The decisive moment arrived in the 88th minute.
Olise collected the ball in his own half, brought it under control with his shoulder and embarked on a powerful run into Belgian territory. The Bayern Munich winger showed impressive composure after beating his marker before calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner.
The goal capped a superb individual contribution and gave France their second victory in as many Nations League matches.
France were without captain and star striker Kylian Mbappe, who missed the match after suffering a knee injury during the victory over Turkey. His absence was noticeable as France created opportunities but lacked their usual cutting edge in front of goal.
Desire Doue was particularly influential and went close on several occasions. The youngster had five attempts, including one effort that struck the crossbar, while France debutant Lucas da Cunha was also denied by the woodwork.
Belgium carried their own threat, particularly through wingers Mika Godts and Dodi Lukebakio. However, France’s relatively inexperienced defensive unit held firm and prevented the hosts from turning their attacking pressure into a goal.
The victory leaves France at the top of Nations League Group A1 after two matches.
France will return to action against Italy on Friday, while Belgium will face Turkey as the group stage continues.
