Mohammed Shami Announces Retirement From Test Cricket After Taking 229 Wickets

Mumbai: India’s experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtains down on a distinguished career in which he established himself as one of the country’s most reliable and effective pace bowlers.

The 36-year-old made the announcement through a social media post on Instagram, marking the end of his journey in the longest format of the game.

Shami finishes his Test career with an impressive tally of 229 wickets in 64 matches, including six five-wicket hauls. His achievements place him among India’s most successful fast bowlers in Test cricket, ranking sixth on the country’s all-time list of leading pacers in the format.

Making his Test debut against the West Indies in 2013, Shami quickly became an integral part of India’s bowling attack. His ability to extract movement off the pitch, generate reverse swing and trouble batters with his pace made him a formidable opponent across different playing conditions.

One of Shami’s biggest strengths was his effectiveness overseas. He claimed 145 wickets in 41 away Tests at an average of 30.33, underlining his importance to India’s performances outside the subcontinent. At home, he picked up 76 wickets at an impressive average of 22.10.

South Africa witnessed some of the most memorable performances of Shami’s Test career. During India’s 2018 tour, the right-arm fast bowler produced a match-winning spell of 5/28 in the second innings of the Johannesburg Test, helping India secure a consolation victory.

He continued his impressive record in the country during India’s next tour, claiming eight wickets in the opening Test at Centurion as the visitors registered another memorable win.

Despite dealing with injuries at different stages of his career, Shami remained a significant figure in India’s pace attack, delivering important performances whenever available.

His final appearance in Test cricket came during the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final against Australia. Although India went on to lose the contest, Shami’s contribution to the team’s journey to the final remained part of his legacy in the format.

With 229 Test wickets to his name, Shami leaves behind a remarkable record and a legacy built on consistency, skill and the ability to deliver under pressure. His retirement marks the end of an important chapter in Indian Test cricket.
