Bengaluru: The Indian men’s football team will begin a challenging series of international friendlies when they take on 2026 FIFA World Cup side Panama at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday.
The match will be India’s first-ever meeting with Panama and the opening game in a demanding three-match sequence against teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. India will next face Brazil in Kolkata on October 3 before taking on Uruguay on October 6.
Panama, ranked 44th in the latest FIFA rankings, arrive as the higher-ranked side. India are currently 94 places below their opponents and will face a team with considerable recent experience on the international stage.
India Looking to End Winless Run
India enter the fixture looking to end a four-match winless streak.
The Blue Tigers suffered defeats against Jamaica and Zimbabwe during the Unity Cup in London before losing 1-3 to Tajikistan. They subsequently drew 1-1 with Tajikistan in the return friendly.
India’s most recent victory came on March 31, when they defeated Hong Kong 2-1 in their final AFC Asian Cup qualifying match.
Head coach Khalid Jamil has urged his players to approach the Panama game positively and not be intimidated by the opposition’s ranking or World Cup experience.
“It is our pleasure to play with a team of their calibre. They have a quality coach and good players, so we are looking forward to playing with them,” Jamil said ahead of the match.
The India coach also stressed that his team cannot afford to rely solely on defensive tactics against Panama.
“We are playing against a strong team. But at the same time, you cannot defend every time. So, we will mix defence and attack. We will react according to the situation,” he said.
Gurpreet Sees Panama Test as Opportunity
India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu believes the match will provide the Indian players with an important benchmark.
“For us as players, this is a good opportunity to play against a team that has just come from the World Cup. They played really well in the World Cup, so it is going to be a very good test for us,” Sandhu said.
India also have positive memories of playing at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. During the 2023 SAFF Championship, the Blue Tigers remained unbeaten at the venue, scoring eight goals and conceding twice in the group and knockout stages before defeating Lebanon and Kuwait in penalty shootouts to win the tournament.
However, Panama will provide a considerably different level of opposition.
Panama Arrive With World Cup Experience
Panama qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup without losing a match, recording seven victories and three draws in their 10 qualifying games while scoring 19 goals.
The Central American nation previously made their World Cup debut in Russia in 2018 before returning to the tournament in 2026.
Their World Cup campaign ended in the group stage after defeats against Ghana, Croatia and England. Panama failed to score in those three matches but conceded only four goals.
Head coach Thomas Christiansen acknowledged that his side will be expected to win against India despite making room for several younger players.
“There’s a big expectation that we will win. But it doesn’t matter if it’s India or Argentina or Brazil. We have to win all our games. But we know that we should be the favourite on paper. We have to admit that,” Christiansen said.
Midfielder Carlos Harvey, meanwhile, is experiencing India for the first time and said he is keen to make the trip memorable.
“It’s a very beautiful experience, because it’s the first time I’ve come here. I’m trying to enjoy it in the best way possible,” Harvey said.
The India-Panama clash therefore promises to be a significant test for Jamil’s team, with the Blue Tigers facing a World Cup-qualified opponent before two more high-profile encounters against Brazil and Uruguay in Kolkata.
