GULMARG: Kashmir’s running calendar is set to get a new addition with the inaugural Gulmarg 12K Run scheduled to take place on November 29, bringing together around 120 runners for a competitive race through the scenic surroundings of the Gulmarg Bowl.
Organised with the objective of promoting fitness, healthy lifestyles and a drug-free society, the event will be conducted along the Gulmarg Bowl Road, with the starting point at Pine Palace Resort, Gulmarg. The race will begin at 9:00 AM.
The initiative is being supported by the Gulmarg Development Authority, with M&Co and Pine Palace Resort Gulmarg backing the event.
The organisers said the idea behind introducing the Gulmarg 12K Run was to encourage greater participation in running and outdoor sports, particularly among young people, while using sporting activities as a platform to spread awareness about health and fitness.
“With this vision, we are organising the Gulmarg 12K Run — An Initiative Towards a Healthy and Drug-Free Kashmir. The objective is to encourage young people to embrace running, adopt healthier lifestyles and contribute towards building a fitter, more active and drug-free society,” an organiser said.
The race is expected to attract some of Kashmir’s promising long-distance runners and provide participants with an opportunity to compete in the unique natural setting of one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.
According to the organisers, the proposed course will feature a loop measuring approximately six kilometres or more, with runners required to complete two laps to cover the 12-kilometre-plus distance. However, the final route and exact distance will be determined after a technical assessment and consultations with the concerned authorities.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the event is also aimed at promoting Gulmarg as a destination for fitness tourism, outdoor recreation and community sporting activities throughout the year.
The organisers believe the race will introduce a fresh sporting attraction during the autumn season, keeping Gulmarg connected with outdoor sporting activities ahead of the busy winter tourism period.
The competition will be conducted in the Open Senior Men’s category, with participation restricted to 120 runners. All registered participants will receive finisher medals, while cash prizes will be presented to the top three finishers.
Registration details are expected to be announced shortly.
With its combination of competitive running, tourism promotion and a social message against drug abuse, the Gulmarg 12K Run aims to become a new addition to Kashmir’s growing sporting calendar and encourage more people to embrace an active lifestyle.
