MUNICH: Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while observing a training session involving the club’s reserve team on Friday, with the Bundesliga leaders confirming that he is undergoing medical examinations.
The German champions said the 40-year-old required medical attention after the incident and would remain under medical supervision while doctors carried out a thorough assessment of his condition.
“Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during a training session for Bayern’s reserve team,” the club said in a statement, adding that the head coach had been observing the second team’s session when the incident occurred.
Bayern confirmed that Kompany’s coaching staff would take charge of training sessions and match-related responsibilities during his absence.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority,” said Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport.
“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery,” Eberl added.
Kompany had reportedly been suffering from a viral illness in recent days, which had affected his involvement in the team’s preparations. He had also missed media duties ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Arsenal.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks represented the Belgian manager at the pre-match press conference, before Kompany returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s match against the Premier League side.
The Champions League fixture at the Allianz Arena ended in a 2-2 draw, with Bayern striker Harry Kane delivering an influential performance. Kane set up Alphonso Davies for a goal before converting a penalty as the German side shared the points with Arsenal.
Bayern are scheduled to travel to Freiburg on Sunday for their next Bundesliga fixture, although Kompany’s availability will depend on his medical condition and recovery.
The club has not disclosed further details about the cause of the collapse or provided a confirmed timeline for his return.
Bayern, who are leading the Bundesliga standings, will prioritise Kompany’s health as the coaching staff prepare to manage the team’s upcoming commitments in his absence.
