Narender Negi: The Coach Leading J&K Women’s Cricket in the Right Direction

One of the longstanding concerns in Jammu & Kashmir women’s cricket has been the lack of intent and low strike rates, particularly in T20 cricket. However, recent performances suggest a shift in approach, with head coach Narender Negi appearing to make a positive impact.

Negi brings considerable coaching experience to J&K. His coaching profile lists stints as Delhi’s U-19 head coach in two seasons, Delhi’s Ranji Trophy coach in 2022–23, and IPL fielding coach with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans.

The change in intent has been visible during the ongoing Women’s U-19 T20 Trophy. Although J&K have managed only one win so far, their batting has shown encouraging signs, particularly in a thrilling contest against Bengal, where they chased a target of 183 to tie the match before losing in the Super Over.

For a side that has often struggled to maintain scoring momentum, such a performance offers a glimpse of what a more positive batting approach can achieve.

Those who have observed Negi’s coaching methods closely say his approach is appreciated by players, particularly the freedom and mental independence he gives them to express themselves on the field. His willingness to back players he believes in is also viewed as a positive, especially in a setup where consistent opportunities have often been a concern.

It is still early to draw firm conclusions, and results will ultimately determine how much progress the team makes. However, the signs of greater intent are encouraging.

Under Negi, J&K women’s cricket has an opportunity to build a more confident, positive brand of cricket and take a meaningful step towards achieving the progress it has long been seeking.
