Ranji Trophy: Sloppy Bowling, Poor Fielding Put J&K on Back Foot Against Madhya Pradesh

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir missed a crucial opportunity to fight back against Madhya Pradesh in their Ranji Trophy 2026-27 Group A encounter, with wayward bowling and disappointing fielding allowing the visitors to strengthen their position at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium on Tuesday.

Despite overcast conditions offering some assistance to the bowlers, J&K struggled to maintain pressure, managing just one wicket in the morning session as Madhya Pradesh added 70 runs in 30 overs to reach 151 for five, extending their overall lead to 227 runs.

Rain eventually brought an early end to the day’s proceedings, but not before Madhya Pradesh had consolidated its advantage through a composed batting effort led by captain Shubham Sharma and Atharva Mahajan.

Shubham remained unbeaten on 51 off 132 deliveries, striking two fours and a six, while Atharva contributed an unbeaten 35 from 84 balls, including four boundaries. The pair stitched together an unbroken 64-run partnership for the sixth wicket, frustrating a J&K attack that struggled to find the breakthrough.

For the hosts, the morning presented an opportunity to put Madhya Pradesh under pressure after Auqib Nabi had picked up two wickets on the previous day. However, neither Nabi nor Sunil Kumar could add to their tally as the home bowlers failed to exploit the conditions consistently.

J&K’s fielding compounded the problem, with missed chances and lapses allowing the visitors to settle and build a commanding position. The lack of sustained pressure gave Madhya Pradesh’s batters the freedom to accumulate runs and push their side closer to a strong first-innings advantage.

It took J&K nearly an hour to make their first breakthrough of the day. Aryan Pandey was caught at gully by Shubham Pundir off Rohit Sharma, but the dismissal did little to disrupt the visitors’ progress.

Shubham then took responsibility for steadying the innings, bringing up a patient half-century and ensuring Madhya Pradesh avoided further setbacks. Supported by Atharva, the captain continued to frustrate the home side until rain interrupted play.

With heavy rain forecast for Wednesday, the weather could play a significant role in determining the outcome. However, Madhya Pradesh’s growing lead has placed J&K under pressure, leaving the hosts needing a much-improved performance if they are to revive their hopes in the contest.
