New York: Monterrey took a crucial 1-0 advantage over Toluca in the first leg of the Mexican Apertura 2025 semifinals on home soil, thanks to a well-timed goal by Germán Berterame. The victory gives the Rayados a favorable position heading into the second leg in Toluca next Saturday.
Monterrey Dominate Despite Toluca Pressure
Monterrey, managed by Domenec Torrent, controlled most of the first half. Nicolas Castro and Portuguese midfielder Paulinho created early chances in the 16th and 33rd minutes, respectively. The breakthrough came in the 39th minute when Berterame capitalized on a cross, heading the ball into the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
Toluca, coached by Argentine Antonio Mohamed, were missing key attacker Alexis Vega, which affected their offensive threat. In the second half, the Red Devils pressed hard, with goalkeeper Luis Cárdenas emerging as the hero. He denied multiple efforts from Paulinho, Castro, and Santiago Simón, and again blocked a late chance from Marcel Ruiz in the 86th minute with help from defender Ricardo Chávez.
With just a draw needed in Toluca next Saturday, Monterrey are well-placed to reach the final.
Tigres UANL Hold Cruz Azul 1-1
Earlier on Thursday, Tigres UANL secured a 1-1 draw against Cruz Azul in the other semifinal first leg. Ángel Correa scored for Tigres, while Gabriel Fernández netted for the Blues.
Tigres have the advantage heading into the return leg due to their superior finish in the regular season. A draw in the second leg will see them advance to the final.
