New Delhi: Security has been tightened across central Delhi, including around the Arun Jaitley Stadium, following a high-intensity explosion near the Red Fort metro station on Monday evening. The tragic incident, just a few kilometres from the stadium, has prompted authorities to increase surveillance and deploy additional personnel ahead of the final day of the Ranji Trophy Group D match between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir.
Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary Ashok Sharma confirmed the heightened security arrangements in a statement to PTI, saying:
“Security will be tightened near Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium (now Arun Jaitley Stadium) on the final day of the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir. I will be in touch with Delhi Police authorities and will request deployment of extra personnel outside the stadium premises.”
Blast Near Red Fort Claims Eight Lives
The blast near Red Fort metro station reportedly occurred in a parked car during peak evening hours, killing at least eight people and injuring more than 20 others. Several nearby vehicles were gutted in the explosion, which sent panic through the area that is often bustling with commuters and tourists.
Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the explosion, with bomb squads and forensic teams deployed at the site.
Cricket Carries On Under Heavy Vigilance
Meanwhile, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Delhi vs Jammu & Kashmir Ranji Trophy match heads into its decisive final day under strict security cover.
Jammu & Kashmir are on the verge of a famous victory, having ended Day 3 at 55/2, needing just 124 more runs to win. The visitors’ young left-arm spinner Vanshaj Sharma produced a remarkable spell of 6/68, claiming his third five-wicket haul in just his fourth first-class appearance.
Earlier, Delhi looked well-positioned at 267/5, with Anuj Rawat and Ayush Doseja building a solid stand. But a sudden collapse saw the hosts lose their last five wickets for only 10 runs, folding for 277 and leaving J&K in control.
Tense Atmosphere Expected on Final Day
With both security concerns and cricketing drama unfolding simultaneously, Tuesday promises to be a tense day at the Kotla. Delhi Police have cordoned off key approach roads, and bag checks are expected to be stricter than usual for players, officials, and spectators alike.
The DDCA has urged fans to cooperate with security protocols and remain patient during entry checks. Despite the tragedy near Red Fort, authorities are determined to ensure player safety and complete the match without disruption.
