Kohli confident enough to hit the Nottingham Test

Kohli4Virat Kohli said he’s confident of playing for India in the next Test against England in Trent Bridge even if he won’t be at a 100% while he’s fielding and running between the wickets. Kohli was bogged down by a lower back strain which kept him out of the field late on Day 3 and early on Day 4 of the second Test at Lord’s. As a result, he had to bat at number five as enough time had not passed for him to return to the field at his regular No.4 position.
Even when he batted, it was clear that Kohli was struggling. The second ball he faced, he knocked it beside the pitch and took a step forward before grimacing with pain. His movements were somewhat restricted while batting, but it was while running that he suffered more. He limped through for his runs, and even had a physio check on him midway through his knock, and needed painkillers to carry on.
Asked about the injury during the post-match presentation ceremony, Kohli said: “Five days to go, (I) should be okay. (It’s the) lower back issue coming up again and again, purely because of the workload. Confident I’ll be fine in five days’ time.”
In the press conference, Kohli explained that he struggled to run and will probably have to cut down some intensity on the field in order to not aggravate the injury.
“The back is one thing that can be very tricky when it goes off. It happened during the latter half of the last leg of the South Africa tour when I missed a T20 game because that was very sudden. It happened one day before.
“The good thing is I have five days before the next Test. We are confident with rehabilitation and strengthening, I should be ready for the next game although not (with) the same intensity in the field but I should be good enough to hold a position in the field and be 100% with the bat.
“Again I will have to look at the running bit of things which was difficult today. As of now it is sore. I am not hiding that fact, but that is part of the game. I had to do what I could do to go there and bat again and try my best.”
India will pray fervently for their captain to be fully fit for the make-or-break game at Nottingham. Kohli was India’s best batsman in the first Test, scoring 149 and 51 in the two innings. He couldn’t replicate the success in the second Test – scoring 23 and 17 – but will remains crucial batsman in the Indian line-up.
With the rest of the batting order having come up a cropper so far, Kohli’s presence and command in the middle will be much needed for the visitors as they hope to turn around a 2-0 deficit with three games to go.
