Japanese wrestler Shinsuke Nakamura eliminated Roman Reigns to win the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble as Rey Mysterio marked a return. It was down to three with Nakamura battling in the ring along with John Cena but the latter was soon eliminated by the Japanese, bringing the match down to the final two. As a result of today’s triumph, Nakamura will now get to challenge SmackDown champion AJ Styles at Wrestlemania 34. From the list of thirty, the final six consisted of an all-star cast of John Cena, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Rey Mysterio, Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura. In other big results, Brock Lesnar pinned Kane to retain the Universal Championship, leaving Braun Strowman out in the cold. Women’s wrestler, Asuka won the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble in 2018 to conclude the event.
After the match, Michael Cole hailed Nakamura for lasting almost 45 minutes. Rene Young came in the ring congratulating Nakamura on his victory and also asked him if he’s decided who he will challenge at WrestleMania 34. Nakamura was in no doubt at all and issued a challenge to AJ Styles for the WWE Championship in New Orleans!
Orton was eliminated by Reigns just before Mysterio was thrown out by Finn Balor, who looked as the best performer of the entire Rumble, and lasted a whopping 57 minutes until he was thrown over the top rope by John Cena. The most exciting return of the night arguably belonged to Rey Mysterio who looked like his old self on WWE return and most notably when hit Cena and Reigns with a double 619 soon after his arrival.
Brock Lesnar vs Kane vs Braun Strownman: Lesnar had been both the overwhelming betting favourite and the most logical pick to get the victory in this particular match. With the result, the Beast Incarnate will now get to fight Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34. This was the third occasion when Strowman had a chance to win the Universal Championship and the third time he failed to do so. At SummerSlam 2017, Strowman faced Lesnar, Reigns and Samoa Joe in a Fatal 4-Way match that eventually saw Lesnar come out as the winner.
A month later, Strowman was defeated by Lesnar in a singles match at No Mercy, which meant that the former lost via pinfall on the main roster for the second time.
