KARACHI: Legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram has thrown his weight behind 17-year-old fast bowler Ali Raza, calling him the future of Pakistan’s bowling attack after the youngster’s impressive performances in domestic and franchise cricket.
In an interview with Wisden Cricket, Akram shared his insights on the global fast-bowling landscape and expressed optimism about Pakistan’s next generation of pace talent.
“Mitchell Starc, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shaheen Shah Afridi are all back in rhythm. Shaheen, in particular, has regained his pace, which is a great sign,” Akram said.
Ali Raza — A Star in the Making
While discussing Pakistan’s domestic cricket, the former captain highlighted Ali Raza’s raw pace and natural ability, despite the teenager not yet featuring for the senior national side.
“I rarely watch first-class matches, but this young fast bowler, Ali Raza, has something special. If he’s guided properly and understands what it takes to be a top red-ball bowler, white-ball success will follow automatically,” Akram noted.
Ali Raza caught attention during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10, representing Peshawar Zalmi. The right-arm pacer bagged 12 wickets in nine matches at an average of 25.25 and an economy rate of 9.18, showcasing consistency and maturity beyond his years.
Raza has also shone at the Under-19 level, taking 26 wickets in 11 Youth ODIs at an economy of 4.91, reinforcing his status as one of Pakistan’s most promising young bowlers.
Akram’s Call for Fair Play in Global Cricket
Wasim Akram also touched upon a sensitive issue — politics in cricket, voicing his disapproval of exclusionary practices in international leagues.
“Sports should be free from politics. Every player from every country deserves a fair chance in league cricket. Be brave, be inclusive — but that’s not happening right now,” Akram remarked.
“That’s where the ICC and cricket boards must step in to ensure opportunities remain open for everyone,” he added.
As Pakistan continues its proud fast-bowling legacy, Akram’s endorsement of Ali Raza may well mark the rise of another name destined to make waves on the world stage.
