UFC Middleweight Champion Khamzat Chimaev Delays Return Until After Ramadan Due to Foot Procedure

New York: UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev will not return to action until after Ramadan 2026, as the undefeated star recovers from a minor foot operation following his title-winning performance.

Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC), who captured the 185-pound championship with a dominant victory over Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319 in August, revealed the update while in Doha, Qatar, where he is cornering Arman Tsarukyan for his UFC Fight Night 265 main event against Dan Hooker.

“After Ramadan” — Chimaev confirms timeline for return

Speaking to Adam Zubayraev, Chimaev explained that he will briefly pause training due to a foot injury:

“My return, after Ramadan. Right now I have a small operation in my foot. I’ll step away from training for a couple of weeks, heal my wound. We’ll prepare after Ramadan, and whoever they give, that’s who I’ll face.”

Ramadan in 2026 is expected to take place from February 17 to March 19, confirming that Chimaev’s first title defence will likely happen in mid-to-late 2026.

Middleweight contenders lining up for title shot

With Chimaev temporarily sidelined, the UFC middleweight division continues to heat up:

Nassourdine Imavov strengthened his claim with a fifth straight win, defeating Caio Borralho in September.

Brendan Allen earned a major upset victory over Reinier de Ridder in October.

Anthony Hernandez remains a serious threat, currently riding an eight-fight winning streak.

The champion’s eventual opponent will depend on how the title picture evolves over the coming months.

Chimaev remains unbeaten and dominant

Chimaev’s win over Du Plessis highlighted his otherworldly strength and grappling prowess, with many analysts labelling him one of the most dominant champions of the modern era. Despite the delay, anticipation for his return remains high among fans and contenders alike.
