SYDNEY: Pakistan batting superstar Babar Azam has been given a unique three-digit jersey number by the Sydney Sixers ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26, set to begin on December 14.
The Sixers, who signed Babar as a direct overseas recruit, confirmed that the 31-year-old will wear the jersey number “056” during the season. The decision comes after a number clash with Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who also wears No. 56 across formats and retains it for the Sixers.
“Babaristan” Fan Zone Boosts Hype
To capitalise on Babar’s massive global fanbase, the Sydney Sixers launched a dedicated fan zone titled “Babaristan” in October, celebrating the former Pakistan captain’s maiden appearance in the BBL. The franchise has already shared promotional videos and photos of Babar unveiling the new jersey.
Starc’s Return Created Jersey Conflict
Mitchell Starc’s addition to the squad earlier this year created a clash, as both he and Babar traditionally sport No.56. To avoid confusion, the Sixers assigned Babar a customised three-figure variant while allowing Starc to continue with his established number.
Babar Azam is expected to make his highly awaited Big Bash debut when the Sydney Sixers face the Perth Scorchers in the opening match at Optus Stadium on December 14.
Other Pakistani Players in BBL 2025-26
Several Pakistani stars will also feature in this year’s tournament:
Shaheen Afridi – Brisbane Heat (Platinum Pick)
Mohammad Rizwan – Melbourne Renegades
Haris Rauf – Melbourne Stars (Retained)
Hassan Khan – Melbourne Renegades
Shadab Khan – Sydney Thunder
Hasan Ali – Adelaide Strikers
The strong Pakistani representation is expected to add extra excitement to the league as fans look forward to blockbuster performances.
