Brisbane: Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith has refused to confirm whether regular skipper Pat Cummins will return for the second Ashes Test against England at the Gabba starting Thursday. Cummins, who missed the Perth Test due to a back issue, is close to regaining full fitness, but Smith remained guarded when questioned about team selection.
Australia extended their unbeaten home run against England to 16 matches with an eight-wicket win in Perth, even without their captain. Despite Cummins bowling strongly in the nets, Smith insisted that the final XI would depend on conditions in Brisbane.
“A heap of things are on the table,” Smith said on Wednesday.
“He’s looked pretty good to me… he’s tracking nicely. But we’ll wait and see.”
Cummins’ return would significantly boost Australia, especially given his exceptional pink-ball Test average of 17.34. England will also recall his damaging spell the last time the teams met at the Gabba, where he claimed a five-wicket haul.
England captain Ben Stokes acknowledged Cummins’ impact, saying:
“Pat’s awesome… he’s done great things as a player and as captain.”
Doubts remain over Khawaja and team balance
Smith provided no clear update on the fitness of Usman Khawaja, who missed the first Test. While praising the veteran opener’s contribution, Smith said his selection remained a call for the selectors.
Australia may also consider fielding an all-pace attack for the pink-ball encounter. This raises the possibility of Nathan Lyon missing out, though Smith again avoided giving certainty.
“Nathan has done really well here… we’ll weigh up the options,” he said.
Australia eye big stride in Ashes and WTC campaign
Australia boast an imposing record in day-night Tests, winning 13 of the 14 they have played, including all three against England. With Cummins potentially returning and the Gabba advantage in their favour, the hosts aim to strengthen their position in the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 and take a major step toward retaining the Ashes.
