‘Shutdown’ Ranji Trophy: India legend lashes out at selectors for Sarfaraz Khan snub

Srinagar: Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at BCCI selectors for continuous snub of Domestic cricket run machine Sarfaraz Khan in Team India selection.

BCCI on Friday announced ODI and Test teams West Indies tour. The team missed name of senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara while questions were raised over non inclusion of Sarfaraz  Khan.

Sunil Gavaskar has said that if players for the Teab India test team is going to be selected on the basis of IPL performances, then BCCI should shutdown Ranji Trophy competition.

Gavaskar said this in an interview with India Today, pointing out that Sarfaraz Khan has consistently performed well in the Ranji Trophy, with an average of 100 runs over the past three seasons.

He questioned what more Sarfaraz needs to do to be included in the squad, emphasizing that even if he may not make it to the playing XI, he should at least be given a spot in the team to acknowledge his performances.

Another former India opener Waseem Jaffer has also raised question over non selection of Sarfaraz Khan. He said team needs middle order batter rather than four openers.

Sarfaraz Khan has amassed 556 runs in six games during the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy, boasting an impressive average of 92.66, including three centuries. In the previous season, he scored 982 runs at an average of 122.75, featuring four centuries.
