Novak Djokovic Hints at Early Retirement Amid Ongoing Injury Struggles

Novak Djokovic Hints at Early Retirement Amid Ongoing Injury Struggles

TURIN: Tennis legend Novak Djokovic has hinted that his illustrious career may end sooner than expected, revealing that persistent injuries and the physical toll of the sport could derail his plan to play into his 40s — and possibly prevent him from competing at the 2028 Olympic Games.

The 38-year-old Serbian star, who captured his long-awaited Olympic gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games, admitted that maintaining motivation and fitness has become increasingly difficult this season. Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the ATP Finals 2025 in Turin after sustaining a recurring injury.

Taking to social media, Djokovic expressed his regret to fans following the announcement.

“I was really looking forward to competing in Turin and giving my best, but after today’s final in Athens, I’m sad to share that I need to withdraw due to an ongoing injury,” Djokovic wrote. “I’m truly sorry to the fans who were hoping to see me play – your support means so much.”

Despite the setback, the 24-time Grand Slam champion remains determined to continue playing as long as his body allows. After winning the ATP 250 title in Athens by defeating Lorenzo Musetti, Djokovic reflected on his long-term ambitions.

“Since I’ve achieved almost every goal in tennis, I mentioned the 2028 Olympics because I wanted to play for many more years,” Djokovic explained. “But I don’t know – there are some things beyond my control. I’m trying to stay as healthy as possible, both mentally and physically.”

With his trophy cabinet nearly complete, Djokovic is reportedly considering a reduced tournament schedule to extend his playing career and manage his fitness more effectively. However, his participation in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics now appears uncertain.

If Djokovic does retire earlier than planned, it would mark the end of one of the greatest careers in tennis history — one defined by relentless ambition, historic records, and unmatched consistency.
