New York: The New York Jets have officially moved on from wide receiver Allen Lazard, releasing the veteran pass-catcher on Tuesday and closing the final chapter of the Aaron Rodgers era in New York.
According to reports, Lazard requested his release in hopes of joining a playoff contender, a move the Jets agreed to as they continue evaluating younger talent on the roster. The 30-year-old receiver was a healthy scratch in four games this season and struggled to secure a consistent role in the Jets’ offense.
Lazard joined the Jets in 2023 on a four-year, $44 million contract, a signing widely viewed as part of the team’s effort to entice quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York. The duo had previously built chemistry during five seasons together with the Green Bay Packers, but that success did not translate in New York.
After Rodgers was released in March, Lazard appeared likely to depart as well. However, he agreed to an $8.75 million pay cut to remain with the team for the 2024 season. The Jets later voided the final year of his contract, making him set to become a free agent after the season.
Over three seasons with the Jets, Lazard recorded 70 receptions for 911 yards and eight touchdowns. His role diminished significantly this year, logging just 250 offensive snaps and finishing with 10 catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.
In total, Lazard earned approximately $24 million during his time with the franchise. The Jets have since shifted focus to younger receivers, including Adonai Mitchell, John Metchie III, and Isaiah Williams.
Meanwhile, top receiver Garrett Wilson has missed the past five games following knee surgery. Head coach Aaron Glenn said he “hopes” Wilson can return before the end of the season, though his availability remains uncertain.
