Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police celebrated National Sports Day-2022.
An impressive function was organized by J&K Police at Lake View Police Golf Course Boulevard Road, Srinagar today. On the conclusion of Plough Run, S.J.M Gillani-IPS ADGP Armed J&K presided the felicitation ceremony. The players of various games of International/National repute who had won the medals at International/national level besides players of Central Sports Teams of J&K Police participated in the Plough Run. ADGP Armed J&K presented mementoes to the International/ National medal winning players on the occasion.
Earlier, Shahid Mehraj-IPS DIG Armed/IR Range Kashmir accompanied by Shri Suhail Munawar Mir CO JKAP-5th Bn, Sukhdev Raj CO JKAP-3rd Security Bn having additional charge of JKAP-9th Bn, Liyaqat Ali SSP APCR Kashmir and Safdar Samoon I/C CO IRP-6th Bn flagged off the Plough Run from Lalit Ghat Boulevard Road Srinagar to IGP CRPF Hqrs. Nishat and back.
While speaking on the occasion, the ADGP Armed S.J.M Gillani-IPS highlighted the history and significance of the event. He said that the National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. The birth anniversary day of Major Dhyan Chand was designated as India’s National Sports Day in the year 2012. On this occasion the President of India gives away Sports related awards such as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award to the excelling sportspersons. While paying tribute to Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the ADGP said that Major Dhyan Chand’s had played a key role in India’s three consecutive Olympic triumphs in 1928, 1932 and 1936. He scored 400 goals in his career that lasted from 1926 to 1948. Dhyan Chand performance in 1936 Berlin Olympic Final is considered as one of his best performance. He was the top scorer in the game with three goals and India went on to defeat Germany 8-1.
Born on August 29, 1905 in Prayagraj formerly known as Allahabad, Dhyan Chand joined the British Indian Army as Sepoy at the age of 16. He exclusively played in Army Hockey tournaments between 1922 and 1926. Dhyan Chand died on December 3. 1979 in Delhi. He was awarded India’s third highest Civilian Honour, Padma Bhushan in 1956.
To mark his birthday, India established National Sports Day in 2012. The purpose of celebration is to honour the sporting legend and create awareness about the importance of sporting activities in everyday life, with a focus on fitness and health.
The ADGP Armed J&K appreciated the efforts of DySP (Sports) APHQ Kuldeep Handoo, Dronacharya Awardee and his team for organizing the event in a smooth and successful manner.
During the felicitation ceremony, the ADGP Armed presented mementoes to a number of players of J&K UT and J&K Police of International/ National repute who had won medals in the International/ National events and brought laurels for the country in general and J&K in particular. The players who were presented mementoes include Parvaiz Rasool-International Cricketer, Mohd Akbar Khan-International Cyclist, Saleem Kumar-International player Wushu, Adil Telli-Guinness World Record holder in Cycling, Akas Gulzar-International player Pencak Silat, Sheikh Najmu Saqib, International player Pencak Silat, Salik Bin Farooq-International player Pencak Silat, Munaza Gazi-International player Wushu, Ayeera Chesti-International player Wushu, Hashim Ashraf-International player Wushu, Danish Farooq-International Footballer (award received by representative of J&K Bank), Arfat Ahmad-National player in Kayaking, Mohsin Ali-National player in Kayaking, Zahid Ahmad-National player in Rowing, Muntazir-National player in Rowing.
Among the JKP Central Sports Teams players, the mementoes were presented to HC Zahoor Ahmad-International player Kayaking, HC Parvaiz Ahmad-National player Kayaking, HC Rayees Ahmad-International player Pencak Silat, HC Nazir Ahmad-Everester 2019, HC Falil Singh-Everester 2019, Ct. Adil Mohi-ud-Din-International player Canoeing, SgCt Roshan Sharma-National player in Wrestling, SgCt Sarfaraz Choudhary-National player in Boxing, SgCt Anju Bala-National player in Boxing (award received by W/HC Khalida Bano), SgCt Imran Hussain-National player in Canoeing, Ct Imran Hussain-National player in Kayaking, Foll. Sajad Ahmad-National player in Kayaking and SPO Mubashir Hussain-National player in Canoeing. Besides, JKP Dare Devil team headed by ASI Balwan Singh was also presented a memento by the ADGP for outstanding performance of the team at Bandipora on 15 August, 2022. All the participants of the events were served high tea on the occasion.
