Islam Makhachev Reacts to Ian Machado Garry’s Title Shot Demand After UFC Qatar Victory

Doha: Newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has responded to Ian Machado Garry’s callout following the Irish star’s major victory at UFC Qatar. Garry’s win over former champion Belal Muhammad thrust him into the title conversation, and the rising contender wasted no time asking for a shot at the division’s newest king.

Makhachev recently became a two-division UFC champion, dominating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in New York to claim the welterweight title via unanimous decision. The victory also restored his position as the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

With the belt now around his waist, immediate debate has erupted over who deserves the first crack at the Russian champion.

Makhachev: “UFC will decide soon”

Speaking to the media after UFC Qatar—where he was seen cornering several bouts—Makhachev acknowledged the impressive performances put on by multiple welterweight contenders that night.

“At my event, two guys were fighting,” Makhachev said. “Both won early, both are young, and they finish fights well. The welterweight division is probably the most active and competitive right now. I think the UFC will decide soon.”

He added that the promotion could finalise his next opponent within two weeks, as at least three or four contenders are currently in the mix.

On Machado Garry: “He didn’t surprise me”

Garry’s name is undeniably gaining momentum following his polished win over Muhammad. But when asked about a potential fight with the 28-year-old, Makhachev offered a measured response.

“It would be interesting,” he said. “He’s a good fighter on a good winning streak and he’s young. We’ll see. He didn’t surprise me yesterday. If he surprised the UFC, then he will probably be next.”

Usman remains Makhachev’s first choice

Right after capturing the welterweight title, Makhachev openly expressed his preference to face former champion Kamaru Usman in his first title defence. Despite Garry’s strong performance, Usman appears to remain the Russian’s personal pick.

With the division heating up and contenders lining up, fans may soon have clarity on what promises to be one of the most anticipated welterweight title matchups in recent years.
