Several players have raised concerns over the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association’s (JKCA) recently announced shortlist for the Buchi Babu Trophy, a multi-day tournament organised by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), questioning how selections were made despite only T20 trials being conducted so far.
JKCA had earlier held open trials across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions, followed by joint trial matches in Srinagar. Following these, 28 players were shortlisted for a fitness camp.
On Wednesday, JKCA released a list of these 28 players, along with Paras Dogra and Abhinav Puri, for the preparatory camp ahead of the Buchi Babu tournament. However, the announcement has sparked discontent among several players who participated in the trials.
“How can you hold T20 trials and then use that to select players for a multi-day tournament? It’s strange. The formats are completely different,” said one of the players, speaking to KSW on the condition of anonymity.
The player further added, “During trials, I tried to play a few defensive shots and one of the selectors told me, ‘Are you giving trials for the Test format?’ So I had to start hitting every ball. It made no sense.”
Others echoed similar concerns, alleging that strong performances in the trials were overlooked.
“If someone ends up as one of the top run-scorers or leading wicket-takers and still doesn’t make the cut, what’s the point of trial matches?” asked another player.
KSW has reached out to JKCA seeking clarity on the selection process but has not received a response yet. The story will be updated if and when the association responds.
