Gautam Gambhir terms Babar Azam as selfish captain

Srinagar: Former India cricketer turned expert Gautam Gambhir has lashed out as Pakistan skipper Babar Azam for not making sacrifice in the interest of team.

Pakistan on Sunday registered its first win in the T20 World Cup 2022 by defeating Netherlands. However their chances took a heavy dent following India’s defeat to South Africa later in the day.

Despite Pakistan winning, Gambhir who was in commentary wasn’t impressed with Babar and termed Pakistan skipper as selfish.

“In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish. It is easy for Babar and Rizwan to open the innings for Pakistan and create so many records. If you want to be a leader, you have to think about your team,” Gambhir said during commentary.

Gambhir further said that there had been many captains, but leaders have been few.

He added that the match against the Netherlands allowed Babar Azam to set an example and allow Fakhar Zaman to open instead of himself.

Previously likes of Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Mohammad Hafeez criticised Babar Azam’s bad captaincy and urged the skipper to bat in the middle order spot.
