Florida QB DJ Lagway to Enter Transfer Portal After Two Seasons with Gators

Las Vegs: Florida quarterback DJ Lagway announced Monday that he will enter the NCAA transfer portal next month, bringing an end to his two-season stint with the Gators.

Lagway, a sophomore and former five-star recruit, was one of the centerpiece signings in former head coach Billy Napier’s 2024 recruiting class. He was ranked the No. 1 quarterback and No. 3 overall prospect nationally by 247Sports coming out of high school.

Lagway’s 2025 Season at Florida

During the 2025 season, Lagway completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 2,264 yards, throwing 16 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in 12 games for Florida, which finished 4-8.

Despite the team’s struggles, Lagway delivered a signature performance in an upset win over then-No. 9 Texas on October 4. However, the Gators went 1-6 against ranked opponents during the season.

Career Numbers with the Gators

Over two seasons, the 6-foot-3 quarterback amassed:

  • 4,179 passing yards
  • 28 touchdowns
  • 23 interceptions
  • 24 games played

As a true freshman in 2024, Lagway posted an impressive 6-1 record as a starter, highlighted by wins over LSU, Ole Miss, Florida State, and Tulane in the Gasparilla Bowl.

Lagway’s Transfer Announcement

Lagway shared his decision via Instagram, expressing appreciation for his time in Gainesville.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an incredible program here at the University of Florida,” Lagway wrote. “After much prayer, reflection, and thoughtful consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Coaching Change at Florida

Florida made a major coaching change during the season, firing Billy Napier after a 3-4 start. The program hired Jon Sumrall, formerly the head coach at Tulane, on November 30 to lead the Gators moving forward.

Lagway’s departure adds another layer of transition as Sumrall begins reshaping the roster.

Transfer Portal Dates to Know

  • Portal opens: January 2
  • Entry deadline: January 16
  • Extended window for CFP finalists: January 20–24

Lagway will be one of the highest-profile quarterbacks available, and his decision is expected to draw interest from several Power Five programs.
