Srinagar: Students of Delhi Public School (DPS) Srinagar shined in the recently held District Srinagar Pencak Silat Championship 2023, at the Indoor Hall Polo Ground, Srinagar, J&K.

The championship witnessed participation of more than 750 athletes and was held on June 17 and 18.

“The DPS Srinagar students made their mark in the championship by securing an impressive haul of medals. Out of the forty students representing the school, they bagged a total of Four Gold, Eleven Silver, and Eleven Bronze medals, demonstrating their prowess and dedication in the martial art sport. Ajwa Abid, Alishba Jeelani, Syed Hafsa & Ahmad Touseef of the school bagged gold in the event,” DPS statement said.

The two-day district championship event was organized by the District Srinagar Pencak Silat Association in collaboration with the Pencak Silat Association of Jammu and Kashmir, under the auspices of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council. The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of Mohammad Iqbal, the In-charge Manager of the Indoor Sports Complex, who served as the chief guest for the event. Prominent officials from the state and district associations of the J&K Pencak Silat Association also attended the championship, it said.

Expressing his delight at the impressive performance of the athletes, Mohammad Iqbal emphasized the remarkable improvement shown by J&K athletes in both national and international competitions. He attributed this progress to the availability of modern training facilities, scientific grooming of athletes, and the development of a robust sports culture in the region.

Irfan Aziz Botta, Treasurer of the Indian Pencak Silat Federation, mentioned that the participants competed across different age groups, including pre-teen, sub-junior, junior, senior men, and senior women. The top-performing athletes from this championship will be shortlisted for upcoming state and national-level competitions scheduled to be held later this year.

Principal Shafaq Afshan of DPS Srinagar expressed her pride in the achievements of the school’s students, stating, “We are thrilled by the exceptional performance of our students at the District Pencak Silat Championship. Their hard work, dedication, and commitment have paid off, and we congratulate them on their remarkable success.”

Chairman Vijay Dhar also commended the students, saying, “DPS Srinagar is committed to providing holistic development opportunities for our students, and we are extremely proud of their accomplishments in the Pencak Silat Championship. This achievement reflects their resilience and determination.”
