Aftermath of viral football video: Player apologises, tournament suspended

Baramulla: A viral video on social media led to an apology from the player and suspension of the football tournament at Sopore on Friday.

A video which purportedly showed a local footballer being ‘unethically aggressive’ towards foreign players went viral on social media with people showing disappointment in comments. People termed it as an onslaught on Kashmir’s hospitality.

Taking cognisance of the video, the President of the District Football Association (DFA) Sopore on Friday issued an order, whose copy is with KSW, saying the tournament has been suspended.

“The intent of this notice is to inform the general public that DFA SOPORE is seriously
condemning the incident that took place yesterday and whose video is currently circulating on
social media platforms. So toughning its stand against any sort of indiscipline/lack of order in the
game, DFA SOPORE has officially suspended IST SAJAD MEMORIAL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT till further orders,” the order vide no DFA/22/001 read.

Meanwhile, the organiser, who was also the referee of that game, said that before making any judgment on video, people should know that football is considered an aggressive game, where fights & fouls are seen even at the international level.

Also, the organiser has discussed the matter with the foreign payers’ team owner, “It is a part of the game & we will play again there soon” the owner said as per the organiser.
