Shai Hope Jokes About Extra Baggage After Third Player of the Match Award on India Tour

West Indies captain Shai Hope has been in such remarkable form during the ongoing India tour that he may soon have a problem fitting all his awards into his luggage.

Hope made the light-hearted remark after producing another outstanding batting performance to guide West Indies to a 24-run victory over India in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The win levelled the five-match series at 2-2, setting up a decisive final encounter in Bengaluru on October 17.

The West Indies skipper collected his third Player of the Match award of the tour after smashing an unbeaten 102 off just 50 deliveries. His innings featured four boundaries and nine sixes, powering the visitors to an imposing total of 247/3.

Speaking after the match, Hope joked about the weight of the trophies he has accumulated through his performances.

“To be honest, those trophies are a bit heavy, so we have to look at the luggage weight. I think we are going to have some problems when I go back home with those Player of the Match awards,” Hope said, while emphasising that his priority remained helping West Indies win matches.

Hope Explains the Formula Behind West Indies’ Big Total

Hope credited the team’s strong start for laying the foundation for a formidable batting performance against India.

West Indies benefited from an opening partnership of more than 50 runs, allowing the middle-order batters to attack with greater freedom and build towards a powerful finish.

The captain explained that establishing a solid platform early in the innings was crucial to maximising the scoring opportunities in the middle overs and during the closing stages.

West Indies eventually finished on 247/3, putting India under considerable pressure in the chase.

Shimron Hetmyer provided an explosive contribution with 33 off just 12 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford remained unbeaten on 49 from 26 deliveries to maintain the momentum.

Hope also pointed out that the pitch was more challenging than the team had initially anticipated. According to him, the surface offered inconsistent bounce, with some deliveries rising sharply while others stayed lower, making stroke-making increasingly difficult as the innings progressed.

He felt that a total exceeding 240 runs was a competitive score under those conditions, particularly with the pitch offering assistance to both spinners and fast bowlers.

Remarkable Run Continues for West Indies Captain

Hope’s century in Hyderabad added another chapter to an exceptional tour of India, during which he has consistently delivered substantial contributions across both limited-overs formats.

The right-handed batter has scored four centuries across the ODI and T20I legs of the tour, along with another half-century. His performances have made him one of the standout players of the series and provided West Indies with a reliable source of runs at the top of the order.

His latest hundred proved particularly important as West Indies bounced back after India had taken a 2-1 lead in the T20I series.

Hope’s composure, combined with his ability to accelerate when required, has helped the visitors post competitive totals and put pressure on the Indian bowling attack.

Keemo Paul Completes West Indies’ Dominant Performance

While Hope’s batting laid the foundation for victory, Keemo Paul delivered the decisive blow with the ball.

India struggled to maintain the required scoring rate despite an aggressive 56 off 22 balls from Sanju Samson. The hosts were eventually dismissed for 223 in 19.3 overs, falling 24 runs short of the target.

Paul claimed five wickets for 41 runs, dismantling India’s batting lineup and ensuring that Hope’s century translated into a series-levelling victory.

The result also highlighted West Indies’ ability to combine explosive batting with effective bowling under pressure.

Bengaluru Set for Series Decider

With the five-match T20I series level at 2-2, India and West Indies will meet in Bengaluru on October 17 for the final match.

Hope will have another opportunity to extend his remarkable run and collect further individual honours, although his primary objective will be to help West Indies secure the series.

After producing multiple centuries and three Player of the Match performances on the tour, the West Indies captain has already made a significant impact.

For now, his biggest concern appears to be a pleasant one: finding enough space in his luggage for all the trophies he has earned in India.
