Portugal began their Nations League title defence with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wales in Lisbon, with Joao Felix scoring the decisive goal in a match the hosts largely controlled.
The reigning champions dominated possession and created the majority of the opportunities, registering 19 shots compared with Wales’ four. However, Portugal were unable to turn their dominance into a more comfortable victory.
Felix broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a low effort from the edge of the penalty area. His shot took a slight deflection off Wales captain Ben Davies before travelling inside the far post, leaving goalkeeper Danny Ward unable to keep it out.
Ronaldo Leads Portugal’s Attack
As has been the case for much of his international career, Cristiano Ronaldo remained the central figure in Portugal’s attack.
The 41-year-old forward, who made his Portugal debut in 2003 and has scored a record 146 international goals, drew huge cheers from the home supporters whenever he moved into dangerous positions.
Ronaldo came close on several occasions. He found the side-netting with one effort and later failed to properly connect with a promising volley from close range.
He appeared to have doubled Portugal’s advantage after the hour mark when he put the ball into the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Ronaldo was substituted seven minutes later, leaving the pitch visibly frustrated by the decision.
Wales Threaten Late Equaliser
Portugal’s attacking momentum dipped following Ronaldo’s departure, allowing Wales to threaten for an equaliser.
Their best opportunity came when Brennan Johnson lifted the ball over Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, only for the effort to strike the face of the crossbar.
The rebound fell into a crowded area, with Lewis Koumas and Dan James both attempting to reach it. Koumas eventually got the shot away, but Ruben Dias was in the right position to block the effort on the goal line.
Portugal survived the late scare to secure all three points and open their Nations League campaign with a victory.
The result gives the defending champions an early boost as they begin their latest bid for another Nations League title, while Wales will look to respond in their next fixture.
