South Africa defeated Australia by 67 runs in the opening ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, producing a strong comeback with the ball after Australia appeared to be in control during the chase.
South Africa posted 297/8 after being asked to bat first, with Matthew Breetzke producing a match-winning century. Australia initially looked well placed in the chase but lost wickets during the middle overs as South Africa’s spinners turned the game around.
Australia were eventually bowled out for 230 in 41.2 overs, falling well short of their target of 298.
Australia lose momentum after strong start
Australia appeared to have taken control of the chase at one stage, but South Africa’s bowlers managed to slow the scoring rate and create pressure through the middle overs.
A series of poor shot selections then cost the visitors valuable wickets, leaving them with too much work to do in the final stages.
Matthew Renshaw, who had been in good recent form, was unable to take Australia over the line as the wickets continued to fall.
Keshav Maharaj completed the victory by dismissing Adam Zampa for seven. Zampa attempted a sweep but picked out Breetzke at square leg, with the South African fielder completing an impressive catch.
The dismissal also gave Breetzke his third catch of the innings, adding to his century.
Breetzke stars for South Africa
Breetzke was named Player of the Match after his outstanding all-round contribution.
The batter, who previously opened for South Africa, said he has become accustomed to batting at No. 4 after occupying the position regularly over the past year.
His century provided the foundation for South Africa’s imposing total and his fielding contribution further underlined his impact on the contest.
Bavuma praises South Africa’s fight
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was pleased with the way his team responded after facing pressure during the match.
“I think all around it was a good fight from the batters and the bowlers,” Bavuma said after the game.
Australia captain Mitchell Marsh, meanwhile, admitted his side was disappointed with the defeat and credited South Africa for performing better when it mattered.
Marsh particularly highlighted Marco Jansen, saying the South African all-rounder was difficult to bowl to, especially with the short boundary.
The Australian captain also expressed frustration at his team’s inability to build partnerships during the chase.
