Will JKCA President Javid Kitab Attend IPL 2026 Final? A Test of Democracy in J&K Cricket

Srinagar: As the newly elected body of the Jammu & Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) prepares to assume full control following the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the elected administration to take charge, a significant question has emerged ahead of the IPL 2026 Final: Will elected JKCA President Javid Kitab officially represent the association at the marquee event?

The question has gained importance amid growing concerns over the functioning of the newly elected JKCA administration, with allegations that a group operating from Jammu, reportedly enjoying support from influential quarters within cricket administration, is attempting to sideline the elected President from key decisions and official processes.

IPL Final Invitation Traditionally Meant for State Association Heads

The TATA IPL 2026 Final, scheduled to be held on May 31 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, is expected to witness the presence of senior officials from cricket associations across the country.

Traditionally, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) extends invitations to Presidents and Secretaries of affiliated state associations for IPL playoff matches and the final. During the years when JKCA was under administrative control, officials appointed under the administrative structure represented the association at such events.

With an elected body now in place, many within cricket circles believe that Javid Kitab, as the democratically elected President of JKCA, should naturally be the official representative of the association at the IPL Final.

Questions Over Authority and Representation

However, uncertainty continues to surround the issue. Sources within JKCA point to ongoing disagreements regarding the distribution of powers within the association. The situation came into public focus when President Javid Kitab approached the court and secured a stay against a meeting reportedly convened without his approval and allegedly without adherence to prescribed notice procedures.

The episode raised broader questions about whether the elected President is being fully empowered to discharge his constitutional responsibilities as the head of the association.

Concerns have also been expressed over access to official communication channels, including the association’s email systems, website management, and the ability to issue notices or directives through official JKCA platforms.

IPL 2026 Could Become a Symbolic Test

For many observers, the IPL Final may become more than just a cricketing spectacle. The event could serve as an early indicator of how the newly elected JKCA administration intends to function after the end of prolonged administrative control. If the elected President is officially invited and represents JKCA at the IPL Final, it would reinforce the principle that authority rests with the office-bearers chosen through the electoral process.

Conversely, if another individual is nominated to represent JKCA in place of the elected President, questions are likely to be raised about the effectiveness of the transition to democratic governance and whether decision-making remains influenced by unelected power centres.

The Bigger Question

The controversy is no longer merely about attending a cricket match. It has become a debate over institutional autonomy, democratic functioning and respect for the mandate delivered through the JKCA elections.

As the IPL Final approaches, the cricketing community in Jammu and Kashmir will be watching closely to see who ultimately represents JKCA on Indian cricket’s biggest stage.
