Man United Held by West Ham as Late Equaliser Sparks Fury in Dugout — Key Talking Points from 1–1 Draw

London: Manchester United were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against West Ham on Thursday night, missing the chance to climb into the Premier League’s top five. After defeating Crystal Palace last weekend, United hoped to build momentum — but a late lapse from a corner proved costly.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring in the 58th minute with a composed finish, but Soungoutou Magassa punished United’s defensive sloppiness with an equaliser eight minutes from time, rescuing a point for the visitors.

Fury in the United Dugout After Late Goal

The reaction on the Manchester United bench spoke volumes. Set-piece coach Carlos Fernandes, who closely oversees every dead-ball situation, was visibly furious after Magassa’s leveller. The defender reacted quickest inside the box, and Fernandes stormed back to his seat in frustration.

United have been one of the Premier League’s most dangerous sides from attacking set-pieces this season, but defensive lapses remain a concern — and this one came at a crucial moment.

Amorim Pleased with Dalot’s Performance

Dalot, who recently regained his starting spot after a short spell out of the XI, impressed again at wing-back. After netting his 10th goal for the club, he celebrated passionately in front of the Stretford End.

He was substituted in the 68th minute for Patrick Dorgu, and cameras captured a brief exchange between Dalot and Rúben Amorim, who appeared to explain the tactical decision. Dalot nodded, showing he understood and appreciated the manager’s reasoning.

Zirkzee Sends a Message — But Misses His Moment

Joshua Zirkzee retained his starting role after scoring against Crystal Palace and again impressed with his link-up play. His interplay with Bryan Mbeumo created several promising moments, though none were converted.

After missing a headed chance early in the second half, Zirkzee ripped off his gloves in frustration — a moment that suggested he intended to take control of the game. He delivered classy touches and drew admiration from supporters, but the lack of a natural goalscoring instinct was evident.

United could have put the game beyond reach had he converted one of his early opportunities. He was later replaced by Mason Mount.

Ayden Heaven’s Tough Night Ends Early

Young defender Ayden Heaven started his first Premier League match since the end of last season, stepping in for the absent Matthijs de Ligt, but endured a challenging evening.

He received a yellow card in the seventh minute and struggled to cope with veteran forward Callum Wilson, who repeatedly targeted him. Heaven came close to conceding a penalty with an outstretched challenge, prompting an immediate reaction from Amorim.

By the 17th minute, Leny Yoro was instructed to warm up, and the change was confirmed at half-time. Heaven has had minimal playing time this season and his rust was noticeable.

Transfer Watch: Christopher Vivell in Attendance

Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell was spotted in the directors’ box, observing scouts and intermediaries present at Old Trafford. With the January transfer window approaching, Vivell is set to play a major role in shaping United’s next steps.

Amorim recently confirmed that United may explore the market despite spending £215 million last summer — though January funds are expected to be tight.

One area to watch closely is the futures of Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo.
Mainoo, who asked for a loan move late in the summer window, is anticipated to push for another temporary switch next month, though it remains unclear whether United will grant the request.
