London: Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero revealed that his sensational injury-time overhead kick against Newcastle United in their 2-2 Premier League draw was inspired by none other than Lionel Messi.
Romero produced a remarkable performance at St James’ Park on Tuesday, scoring both goals for Spurs as they fought hard to secure a crucial point.
Newcastle took the lead in the 71st minute through Bruno Guimarães, but Romero responded quickly with a looping header just seven minutes later. Anthony Gordon restored the Magpies’ advantage in the 86th minute, and Tottenham appeared to be heading towards a fourth straight defeat.
However, in stoppage time, Romero stepped up again with a spectacular overhead kick that drifted past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, rescuing Spurs in dramatic fashion.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Argentine centre-back said the equaliser was particularly special as Tottenham had struggled in recent weeks.
“The first goal was very important,” Romero said. “In the last three or four games the team weren’t good enough. It has been a difficult time, but in this game, I loved the mentality.”
Reflecting on his stunning overhead finish, Romero credited Lionel Messi for influencing his technique.
“Every day with Leo Messi in the national team I watch him, and it is a beautiful goal,” he added.
Romero and Messi have formed a strong partnership within the Argentina national team, playing vital roles in the 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph and the Copa América 2024 victory.
